Project Overview
Following investigations into faults affecting an existing helideck structure, the end client and contractor agreed to replace the helideck and associated support structure with a new-build system.
Elgenio was tasked with developing the engineering required for transportation and installation of the replacement helideck and support structure, including the mechanical and electrical hook-up activities.
Our scope also included the engineering documentation required for the transportation and installation campaign, including procedures, inspection and test plans, as-built documentation and offshore engineering support.
The Challenge
The project was delivered during the COVID-19 pandemic across multiple European locations, with travel restrictions preventing many routine site visits and inspections.
Installation engineering was also being developed in parallel with the detailed design of the helideck and support structure. Changes to the structural design, including a move from bolted connections to a fully welded arrangement, resulted in late changes to the offshore installation scope and additional requirements for preparation, welding and coating.
The project included complex lifting and installation methods with tight fit-up tolerances at the welded structural interfaces.
Lifting operations were also subject to restrictive wind limits due to the large sail area of the helideck structure.

The Solution
Elgenio took an active role in leading the installation engineering within the project consortium and worked to ensure that installation requirements were considered alongside the developing structural design.
As the design evolved, the installation methodology and supporting engineering were updated to accommodate changes to the structural interfaces, connection details and offshore work scope.
During the offshore campaign, Elgenio provided engineering support to the site management team, allowing the programme of works to be adapted around changing priorities and weather restrictions.
By considering the structural design, lifting requirements, installation sequence and offshore execution constraints together, the project team was able to develop a practical installation approach rather than treating each engineering discipline in isolation.
